How to Keep Your Jewelry Clean All Summer Long

Summer is the season of sunshine, vacations, and outdoor adventures—but it’s also a time when your jewelry faces extra challenges. From saltwater swims to sunscreen smudges, the warm weather can quickly dull the shine of your favorite pieces if you’re not careful. Luckily, a few simple habits and some gentle cleaning can keep your jewelry looking brilliant no matter how high the temperatures climb. In this guide, you’ll learn easy tips to protect, clean, and care for your jewelry all summer long so you can wear it with confidence wherever the season takes you.

Stay away from Chlorine and Salt water

Jewelry is more than just an accessory, it's an investment that holds personal meaning. With summer in full swing, remember to take off your jewelry before heading into the ocean or pool to avoid damage. Chlorine and saltwater are no friends to your jewelry. Chlorine can tarnish silver and damage gemstones, while saltwater causes long-term corrosion. The best move? Take off your pieces before swimming and rinse them well with fresh water if they get wet.

Clean your Jewelry weekly

Cleaning your jewelry often is key and very simple.
What You Need:
- Mild dish soap
- Warm water
- Soft-bristled toothbrush
- Lint-free cloth or microfiber towel
How to Do It:
- Soak your jewelry in a bowl of warm water and a few drops of dish soap for 10–15 minutes.
- Gently brush away any residue, especially around prongs and crevices.
- Rinse thoroughly with clean water.
- Pat dry with a lint-free cloth and let air dry fully before storing or wearing.

Keep Away from Sunscreen and Lotion

Sunscreen and lotions often contain oils and chemicals that leave film or residue on your jewelry. This buildup can cause gemstones to look cloudy or dull and attract dust and dirt on your jewelry. Even durable stones like diamonds can lose their sparkle when coated with lotion or sunscreen, making them appear milky or greasy instead of brilliant. Some ways to prevent this is to apply sunscreen and let it fully absorb into your skin before putting on your jewelry. Keeping your jewelry free of product buildup ensures it stays radiant, clean, and damage-free especially during the summer when sunscreen use is high.

Avoid Direct Sunlight and Heat

Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight and high temperatures can cause significant damage to certain types of jewelry, especially pieces with delicate or organic gemstones. In many stones direct sunlight can cause fading or change of color when exposed to sunlight for long periods. Other things like gems can crack, dry out, or become brittle in excessive amounts of heat. It is very important to keep your jewelry in a safe shaded space when not in use. Use a jewelry box or fabric pouch to block light and reduce heat exposure during travel or storage. Protecting your jewelry from sun and heat ensures it stays vibrant, stable, and long-lasting.

Be Mindful During Physical Activity

When planning activities it is important to be mindful of your jewelry. Make sure to take off your jewelry when working out, playing a sport, hiking, or even cleaning. These activities can expose your jewelry to dirt, sweat, and many more things that can damage your jewelry. It is important to either not wear jewelry or plan to wear jewelry that is less likely to get caught or damaged. Being mindful during physical activity protects both your jewelry and your skin, so you can enjoy summer without damaging your favorite pieces.

In conclusion, keeping your jewelry clean all summer long comes down to a mix of mindful habits and regular maintenance. Warm weather often brings sweat, sunscreen, chlorine, and saltwater, all of which can dull or damage your favorite pieces. To protect your jewelry, remove it before swimming, working out, or applying lotions, and clean it gently with mild dish soap and water on a weekly basis. Store your items in a dry, shaded place when not in use, and consider having valuable pieces professionally cleaned at the end of the season. With a little extra care, you can keep your jewelry sparkling all summer and beyond.
